The Story of SexEd!
What is SexEd!?
SexEd! is a Strategic Cohort of EMERJ. We are: Asian Communities for Reproductive Justice, California Latinas for Reproductive Justice, Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights, Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health, and SPARK Reproductive Justice Now. Collectively, we created The New Sex Ed: Empowered Youth Strengthening Communities - a cutting edge resource for you, your organizations, and your communities!
This isn't just your ordinary comprehensive sexuality education campaign! For 18 months, we worked together to build momentum for sexuality education justice for communities that are usually left out of programs and policies around comprehensive sexuality education.
For years, we've known that Abstinence-Only is a failed strategy that only further harms youth, our families and our communities. But we have also known that "comprehensive" sex ed doesn’t go far enough. So we have created new tools and developed a new framework for sexuality education justice that builds from comprehensive sex ed and looks beyond towards:- Sexuality education that has a HOLISTIC view of sexuality & sexual health, including positive body image, self-esteem, gender identity, sexual orientation, and communication and decision-making in relationships
- Sexuality education that recognizes sexuality as a NATURAL part of human development and does NOT make sexuality seem dirty or dangerous
- Resources that focus on promoting overall sexual health for all people, including marginalized communities — people of color, LGBTQ folks, people with disabilities, immigrants, etc.
- Resources that include the cultural experiences of communities of color, including both youth and adults
- EQUITY in sexuality education for all students and all people
- Sexuality education JUSTICE
Through our collective work, we have developed and supported our leadership, increased our skills and capacity, and built deep relationships that we will carry forward in our work for justice in the future.
