What Is The New Sex Ed?
The New Sex Ed: Empowered Youth Strengthening Communities
On this website you'll find lots of tools and resources that you can use to bring sexuality education justice to your communities! These tools were created by local organizers who are building our own movement by creating organizing tools and resources that are relevant to our communities, who are usually left out of programs and policies around comprehensive sexuality education, and re-framing the public debate so that the needs and priorities of our communities are front and center. Using these tools, you can learn how to:
- Think about sexuality education in a holistic way and understand how sexuality education connects to all of our important struggles for justice. Check out the Sexuality Education Justice framework.
- Tell the stories of our experiences. FIRE: Sparking the Flames in Each Other, SPARK Reproductive Justice Now’s zine, is a model for youth communities to make what we need and lifts up the voices of queer and trans youth of color in Atlanta, Georgia.
- Connect to folks in your community. Many of us are told that our communities don’t believe in sexuality education or don’t think it's important. But we have two tools that say otherwise:
- Lifting Up Latino/a Voices!, California Latinas for Reproductive Justice’s video of Latino parents and caregivers who are both interested and taking action.
- Transforming API Communities, a toolkit developed by Asian Communities for Reproductive Justice to engage Asian parents and caregivers in getting ready to take action for sexuality education justice.
- Build alliances for change. Most of us don’t have the power to change policies on our own. So watch Community Interpretation of Reproductive Justice, Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights’s video about how they have built alliances that can work together for sexuality education and reproductive justice.
- Make new policies. If you want to change policies in your local school community, then this is the tool for you. Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health has documented their proven recipe for school policy change in Organizing for Policy Change.
The New Sex Ed is a collective project of SexEd! We invite you to learn about sexuality education justice, use these tools, and bring change to your communities!
