Organizing for Policy Change

Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health

Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health is contributing a step-by-step guide for organizers to change local school board policy, including tactics, strategies and different models that have been successful in changing local school board policy in support of comprehensive sex ed. This toolkit has many different components and strategies on how organizers can involve different stakeholders in the process while making sure that youth are at the center and are part of the planning.

How can YOU use Organizing for Policy Change?

  • Use it to organize your community to pass comprehensive sexuality education policies at your local school board. There are also useful tools and models on how to do organizing on any social justice issue!
  • If your local school board has already passed comprehensive sexuality education policies that need to be implemented, use the toolkit to provide support in the implementation phase, like creating a youth advisory board!
  • Use the toolkit to demonstrate to funders that reproductive justice organizations are doing successful policy change work, and that there are measurable equity and justice outcomes in sexuality education campaigns when our communities are at the center of our work!

Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health envisions a world in which all young adults in Illinois use their power to achieve health and well being in their own lives and for their communities. In partnership with youth, we advocate sound policies and practices that promote a positive approach to adolescent sexual health and parenting. Our strategies to support this mission include development of young leaders, policy analysis and development, advocacy, and training of both youth and adults.
