Bringing Sexy Back: Youth Organizing Extravaganza, Summer 2011
Join us as our youth celebrate sexuality education through poetry, theater, music, visual art pieces and more!

Thursday, August 18th
6:30-9pm
Oakland Asian Cultural Center
388 9th Street, Oakland 94612
2011 has proved to be a fulfilling year for ACRJ's youth program. Conversations around gender roles, identity, homophobia and race have populated youth spaces in our office, providing young Asian men and women from Oakland with the opportunity to voice their concerns about these issues.
SAFIRE, in its 6th programmatic year, encourages young Asian women to develop greater awareness of themselves as part of family and community. Thirty-two young women come together weekly to practice being allies to each other as future leaders in our communities, led by SAFIRE Program Coordinator Mai Doan and Youth Organizing Manager, Amanda Wake.
The Young Men's Program, led by coordinator Jack DeJesus, is in its pilot year. Over the last seven weeks, the young men have been learning about the ways homophobia play out in our schools, homes and communities and how they can stop that from happening. They've also been breaking down gender roles and defining for themselves what it means to be a young Asian man today.
The young men and women have also participated heavily in our Strong Families story collection process by sharing stories and narratives about their families. Join us as they celebrate these stories through art.
